Geese & Dog Feces

Although Canada geese are lovely birds, the excessive amount found on the lake has contributed to high levels of e-coli bacteria. Three years ago, over 200 geese were estimated living on the lake. In turn 2 kind members, with permits from the Federal Government of Canada conduct 'egg shakes'. Here's how it works, female geese lay their eggs in spring, by removing their eggs, they simply lay more. By shaking the eggs, the goose is led to believe everything is fine. However, they often will not return next spring due to low reproduction.

During April of 2005 approx. 155 eggs were shaken within 23 nests. Only 47 geese and 8 goslings (native to our lake) were reported seen, which is significantly less than the year before. This however does not take into consideration the high amount of migratory geese found on the lake in early spring and during fall (from September until November). PPL will continue to conduct egg shaking each spring.

We the committee members of PPL are very much animal activists and love nature. Some may consider this act as cruel and unkind, however we are not out to destroy the entire geese population on our lake. The Ministry of Natural Resources estimates that our lake is suitable for a geese population of approx. 40 to 80 geese. These birds continue to grow in huge numbers throughout North America, therefore their benefit and ours, we continue to help control the geese population.

In addition, dog feces also contain deadly e-coli bacteria. Therefore in conjunction with the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville By-law, we ask that all residents who own a dog kindly 'stoop and scoop' after their dog.

A reminder that all dogs must be on a leash at all times when on public property or if your yard does not have a fence. Its the law!
